Joseph Ford's Philosophy

My Instructional Technology philosophy is centered on mentoring students through the use of technology.  As a college instructor with an engineering background, I believe that through the merging of Civil Engineering and Instructional Technology, students will be able to build a skill in design and knowledge of how to solve engineering problems.  This philosophy explores my desire to mentor students from the following angles:

Instructional Technology and Mentoring as a Learner

As a student of Instructional Technology, I seek to learn the latest technology in my field of Civil Engineering so that I can stay updated and properly use it to tach my students (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021).  This includes learning the computer-aided-design (CAD) software, Autodesk Civil 3D.  This software is the bedrock of the Instructional Technology infrastructure within my program. 

Instructional Technology and Mentoring as an Educator

As I embrace the role of a learner in Instructional Technology, I seek to use my knowledge to motivate my students.  They will able to use the technology to analyze an engineering scenario from multiple angles so that he or she is prepared to solve any engineering problem during their career (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021).  All assignments are integrated with the tools used in Instructional Technology and are based on real-world scenarios that incorporate a simulated work environment for the purpose of providing hands-on education (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021).  By doing this, I am providing an immersive experience for my student.

Instructional Technology and Mentoring as a Leader

Having the knowledge of Instructional Technology, I seek to be an empowered leader for the purpose of helping my students learn the skills necessary to become a civil engineering technician.  This includes empowering students to use technology to build their skills while adopting a mindset of continuous improvement and learning (Smaldino et al., 2019).  I also seek ways to integrate new technologies useful for advancing the skills of my students (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021). 

Upon Graduation, my students should be able to apply their skills at their designated employment so they can become productive citizens (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021) and success stories to others interested in joining my program.  Finally, I believe that collaboration with colleagues and students to discover new ways to implement the technology necessary to produce future civil engineering technicians (International Society for Technology in Education, 2021).
