Career Description

Civil Engineering Technicians make use of the principles and theories of engineering, science, and mathematics to technically solve problems that include research and development, sales, inspection, construction, manufacturing, and maintenance. Their main function is more concentrated and application-oriented compared to most engineers and scientists. Engineering technicians help out scientists and engineers particularly in research and development. Some of them are assigned to work in quality control doing product and processing inspections, carrying out tests, or gathering data. In manufacturing, they do help in designing, developing, or producing products. Although many workers are called technicians because they fix or maintain different types of equipment in electronic, electrical or mechanical, they are, however, covered in the Handbook section on occupations for installation, maintenance, and repair.

Engineering technicians assigned in research and development set up the equipment, organize and perform experiments, gather data, compute or record results, and assist scientists or engineers in other tasks like creating prototype versions of recently designed equipment. Also, they help in designing work through computer-aided design and equipment drafting (CADD).

Civil engineering technicians assist civil engineers to plan, supervise constructions of bridges, buildings, dam, highways, waste water treatment systems, and other structures. Others estimate costs and materials needed. Some may execute land-surveying duties or even prepare drawings. Others may study traffic conditions through setting up and monitoring used instruments.
